IMPACT: Great Leadership Changes everything review and giveaway

I was asked to review this book and I really enjoyed it.  It made me realize that you can’t lead others if you put yourself above them and lord it over them you need to put yourself at their level and see things at their perspective as well as your own.

Mr Irwin has many examples of great leaders and why they were or are great leaders and in some cases why they fell.

We need a sound Core in our character to be leaders.  “First, we want to optimize our effectiveness in leading others such that they truly give themselves unreservedly to the mission.  Second, we want to steer ourselves clear of that terrible path of personal destruction that so many leaders seem to follow.  Both are tied to an intact core.

We need to do examine ourselves and our motives and then self-regulate ourselves.

We judge ourselves by our intentions, while others judge us by our behavior.

We let others do our thinking for us for example if so and so who is for example a brilliant actress endorses a candidate or product, we blindly do the same, without question.  We talk ourselves into stuff that is going to hurt our core values in the long run by not reasoning stuff out for ourselves.

“I don’t have to follow the normal rules … my position is above that.”  Power, by its very nature, potentially influences a leader to creatively engineer ways to justify their decisions even when the belief that guides their actions is wrong.

He believes that we must learn to listen and pay attention to our inner voice “failure to do so may but our ability to lead in grave peril.  The key is not just hearing but, when necessary, learning to forcefully change the message of our inner voice to be a strong leader.

We must also learn to control our impulses.  Hold back our anger, our lashing out at someone who doesn’t agree with us or the way we think things should be.

Also we must watch who we follow (Media, Authority figure, superiors, Peers)  and how they influence our life and our core.  We need to weigh what they say and do and discard that we don’t believe ourselves.

I fell that even though we are only little leaders and lead mostly the people around us and our family.  We should be accountable to ourselves and spend time evaluating our motives and our goals and how they effect those around us.  Our children learn by our example and we need to know what we stand for and show them that we are genuine, that we really care about them and people around us, and teach them to be responsible for their actions, thoughts and the consequences of what they do with their lives.

We can make big changes just by stepping up and being Leaders.

If you are interested, there is an online assessment that you can take. You will be able to examine the elements that support or undermine people's effectiveness and learn how to processes to develop leadership competencies and characteristics. I found that this is really helpful.
